Close-up of the fireplace base: the carved limestone column with deep vertical fluting that reads as bark, flanked by two symmetrical stacks of split firewood against walls of stacked stone.

Column Outdoor Fireplace, Long Island

Limestone · 2009 · Private residence, Long Island, NY

An outdoor fireplace for a Long Island residence — the hearth frames a hand-carved Indiana limestone column shaped as a weathered tree trunk, set against walls of stacked natural stone and softened by a landscaped garden with reflecting pool. A commission developed with architect Sal Larosa.
